I keep reading on various blog and being told by other do-it-yourself homeowners that May is “National Home Improvement Month” so I decided to look into this claim a little deeper just for fun.

It turns out that it was started by an organization called the National Association of the Remodelling Industry (NARI). They’re an organization that has roots all way back to 1935 and they generally focus on promoting the remodelling industry and keep high work and ethical standards within the industry. The organization is mostly comprised of contractors and business members associated the remodelling, construction and home manufacturing industry.

I couldn’t find an exact reason for choose May other than that’s the month when the weather really begins to lend itself to working on “larger” home projects and it’s the time when most people generally start visiting the hardware store every weekend and brainstorming for new home ideas.

NARI has a website that is mostly about the organization itself and talks a lot about how to hire a contractor or plan a remodelling project, but it also has some basic information for homeowners well.
