May is National Home Improvement Month

I keep reading on various blog and being told by other do-it-yourself homeowners that May is “National Home Improvement Month!” It makes sense that May is National Home Improvement Month here in the United States because that’s when the weather begins turning warm, it’s when people begin to think about spending more time outside their homes and visiting other people and it’s when a lot of people find themselves with some free time to spend on sprucing up the house before worrying about vacations and other summer plans.

NARI says May is National Home Improvement Month

It turns out that it was started by an organization called the National Association of the Re modelling Industry (NARI). They’re an organization that has roots all way back to 1935 and they generally focus on promoting the remodeling industry and keep high work and ethical standards within the industry. The organization is mostly comprised of contractors and business members associated the remodeling, construction and home manufacturing industry.

But May is the perfect month for home improvements not because it’s the only month you have to really do things yourself, but because it’s a good time to actually sit down and plan out the improvements and the repairs you want to make throughout the upcoming year.

This almost makes sense from a financial standpoint. A lot of the larger hardware stores and home stores work on a fiscal year that often runs from July to June of the following year. That means that they will often try to roll out new products and new sales methods at some point during the summer months and to do that they need to clear out the old inventory of home improvement supplies and materials to make room for the new. That means one things for you: sales!

From late April until the end of June most home stores are doing everything they can to discount products and get people in the store, not only for landscaping and outdoor tools and supplies, but also to get rid of the old and start advertising the new. That makes May the perfect time to not only start a home improvement but to also browse for ideas, make plans and get quotes for improvements and even buy materials in advance of actually completing the product. When I decided to install vinyl gutters on my house I actually bought the gutter and the all the supplies in early June because I was able to combine a few coupons with some great sales and I ended up getting my vinyl gutter parts for about 30% less than what I would have paid just a few weeks later. I just stored everything in my garage until I was ready to put them up later in the summer.

So I hope you enjoy May and I hope you take some time to think about new and exciting ways you can improve your home and make it more livable. If you’re looking for more information on National Home Improvement Month then feel free to visit the NARI website that is mostly about the organization itself and gives some info on how to hire a contractor or plan a remodeling project.
