The peroxide is working great, but I combined it with another tip I read. Before applying the peroxide, make a series of tiny holes (I used a push pin) which allows the peroxide to get into the wood and do it's job. I only did this once, before the first application. Hope this helps those of you that love your pets but not the "presents" they leave behind! Now, if only I could find a way to get them from delivering them in the first place.

To remove black or grayish spots on a light wood floor I have pretty much tried all of the comments above with minimal results. I tried using leftover hair bleach from a frost and tip kit. I mixed it as instructed and took the hair brush included and painted it on the dark area following the wood grain - after 5 minutes check what is going on or sooner, keep doing this until you get the result you want. I had 2 black spots and after doing this and then using my floor cleaner on the entire floor it is barely noticable. Any hair highlighting kit works for this.

I have been sanding and working on floors where there was previously carpet. I could never remove those black stains. I tried a lighter finish, but it was still there. Just read this and went and bought two bottles of hydrogen peroxide. Wish me luck!

I probably would not recommend trying this on Hydrogen Peroxide trick on laminate floors. Most liquids will damage laminate floors because they are really just paper/fiber boards with a plastic coating. I would guess that hydrogen peroxide would not only bleach the plastic coating (or it may not do anything to it) but it would almost definitely swell the paper beneath it. I don't recommend trying it...

I just Tried the Peroxide on my stair treads and in a few hours I see it getting lighter. I removed carpet from my steps and found every step had dark urine stains my floor guy, who is a friend of mind told me hes been in business for 30 years and said nothing takes out urines stains.I first tried Rug Doctor Urine stain remover after one time the stain did get lighter. After trying Peroxide without scrubbing and blotting the stain was lighter in 1 hour then the other treatment. I am waiting overnight to see the end results Thank you for advice it would have cost me $2,200 to replace them

Linda, something that I've used on my wood floor and even on my linoleum is vinegar mixed with hot water. It'll leave a bit of a vinegar smell for a little while, but when it fades the dog smell will be gone.

It is possible to completely, cheaply and easily remove those black, opaque dog urine stains from a wood floor that completely obscures the wood grain, even if in place for some years. I discovered such a stain, about a foot in diameter on an oak floor that had been obscured from sight by a rug. The floor finish had been only Tung Oil so the wood was permeable to the urine. A the first attempt was to spray on some OxyMagic (which is simply hydrogen peroxide and some isopropyl alcohol) that was on hand. The result was minimal at best. When the site dried I spread on an even layer of Sun Oxy laundry powder (which was also on hand). OxyClean would likely work as well. These are the powders that advertise to add a scoop to every laundry load to remove stains. The powder was then wetted down with the hydrogen peroxide spray, covered with some polyethylene plastic and covered with the carpet to provide some pressure. This remained in place for a day. The site was then uncovered and allowed to dry. The powder had formed a plaque that would not brush off but was easily scraped off. The dark, opaque stain was gone and the natural wood grain showed clearly. The site had a slight grayish cast. Each subsequent day I sprayed the site with hydrogen peroxide and allowed the site to dry. By the third application the site was as pristine as the surrounding uncontaminated floor.

It should almost definitely work on unfinished wood. I'm still a little unclear about how it works so well on finished wood. Test a small spot first, but I don't see why it wouldn't get rid of black stains on unfinished wood floors just as well.

For the last year, I've been living in a rental home that was built sometime in the 1910's. While my landlords have put carpet in most of the rooms, the entryway still has unfinished wood floors. The floors did have some stains when I moved in, but I'm sad to say that a pitbull puppy has done far more damage than I thought possible. I'm hoping to try your peroxide idea as a last resort. Any idea if it will work on unfinished wood?

My comment to 15. Amy: I was concerned about urine (and worse) seeping between the boards. My brother says that the odor eventually evaporates and it not a problem. He appears to be right.

We have an old dog staying with us and I was beside myself when I saw a dark stain on my hardwood floor. I tried a couple of suggested remedies. Then I used peroxide as you suggested and the stain has virtually disappeared. Thank you, Thank you.

Thanks so much! We're refinishing our 93-year-old maple floors by stripping the old shellac with denatured alcohol and applying new shellac. We found three (at least 11-year-old) pet stains right in the middle of the floor. Dabbed on hydrogen peroxide after finding your post, and even after only 30 minutes there was a noticeable positive difference. I think it will take at least 2-3 applications to get it all, but I really appreciate the tip and the photos—that helped a lot too!

My floors have a polyurethane finish. Has anyone put polyurethane over the peroxide lightened stain to see if the stain comes back thru the urethane finish. I know it does if you use bleach. Bill

Hydrogen Peroxide did the trick for me. I had a very deep, black dog urine stain on my white oak floors. They were stained a natural color, so they were medium light The 3% hydrogen peroxide from the drug store was applied and rubbed into the wood with a q-tip, little by little. It worked, but oh so slightly. The following day I used a tiny syringe to apply a little larger amount to the stain and let it sit 24 hours. I kept repeating this process for more than a week, probably two weeks. The stain lifted completely! I would always try using the smallest concentration of hydrogen peroxide and let it stand on the stain 24 hours, then reapply until the stain is gone. I am so grateful that this worked.

I'm trying this on a Danish Modern dresser. I'm the one that left the window open. Then, after an emergency call from my mother, I packed up kids and cats and we moved in with her for a few months (summer months), all the while leaving the window open to the wind and rain. There was a plant on the dresser that died, and the rain left rings around that pot, so I'm sanding it now as a last resort, and was planning on taking it to either Salvation Army (it's in good condition, just stains all over the top) or the dumpster, but now I'm going to try the peroxide. I have it on hand because it's a great germ killer after brushing teeth, it kills germs on cuts and scrapes, and it's definitely cheap. If this works, I'll sand the whole thing and then refinish with an oil and wax finish, or maybe tung oil. Thanks!

This tip worked very well for me also. I used the same technique (3% hydrogen peroxide, dabbed on the spot with my fingers, multiple applications with time between). I think the best part of it is that certain areas lightened quicker, so on subsequent applications I only needed to dab the darker areas. Thanks a lot!!!
