I finally got around to picking up an LED bulb and decided to give it a quick review when compared to the CFL and incandescent light bulbs I still have in my house. I’m one of those people who, despite all the logic that says that LED bulbs are cheaper to run and last longer than any other light bulb, still have some pretty big reservations about spending more than $20 for a single light bulb. I happened to end up with a gift card and a coupon to Lowe’s a few days ago so I went ahead and picked up a few things I’d been wanting, including a relatively small 430 Lumen LED light bulb that is supposedly the equivalent of a 40 watt incandescent bulb. Here’s a quick review of the LED light bulb that I picked up: The LED bulb I picked up is an “Utilitech Pro” bulb which is a brand of bulbs that is distributed by the Feit Electric Company. They’re usually on the less expensive end of the LED bulbs that are out there but they still aren’t cheap. You can pick up this particular Dimmable LED 40 Watt Equivalent light bulb from Amazon.com [...]

We always use a live cut Christmas tree in our home, so every year around this time I get mildly obsessed about figuring out clever ways to water my Christmas tree without climbing under the tree, sticking my fingers in dirty water and then trying to pour just the right amount of water in without causing a minor flood in my living room. There are lots of different Christmas tree watering systems, but most of them work using the same basic principals and ideas. It’s a present! It’s a tree watering device! Fake Present Christmas Tree Watering System: If you’ve seen one watering system, it’s probably similar to this one. It looks like a cardboard box or wrapped Christmas present, but inside is a plastic bladder that can be filled with water. The water sits in the box and, if all goes well, you can set a little valve so that water will seep out of the box to the point where it seeks it’s own level in the tree stand. Most people like them, though you do seem to have to fiddle with them to get them working just right sometimes. If you don’t like the single square box [...]

One of the best and least expensive ways to lower your utility bills all year round is to replace the manual thermostat in your home with an electronic programmable thermostat. Installing a programmable thermostat is not a difficult home improvement project if you follow the directions for your model of thermostat closely. If you’re not comfortable doing it then most heating and air conditioner repair companies will install it for you at a very reasonable price. Most programmable thermostats are affordable and easy to use. This one sells on Amazon.com for less than $100. The advantages of a programmable thermostat are pretty easy to see. Electronic thermostats will automatically turn the hear or air conditioner on or off throughout the day according to your instructions. This gives you the ability to only use the utilities when you need them and when you’re home. For example: lets say you leave for work at 8:00AM every morning and don’t get back until 5:00PM each day during the summer. You can program your thermostat to let your house get to 80 degrees during the day and then have it automatically turn on and cool the house back down to 74 degrees as you [...]

Troy-Bilt has always been a well-known brand when it comes to lawn mowers, but this year they’ve come out with a new line of lawn mowers that feature their new “TriAction Cutting System™” which is a collection of improvements designed to cut grass and mulch grass better than other mowers. The Troy-Bilt TB230: One of a new line of TriAction Lawn Mowers A month or so ago Troy-Bilt contacted me after noticing how often I used my Troy-Bilt chipper vac and asked if I would like to review one of their new walk-behind mowers with this TriAction Cutting System™. In exchange for a fair review, I was given my choice of a Troy-Bilt mower and I went with the model that Popular Mechanics picked as one of their most popular lawn mowers: the Troy-Bilt TriAction TB230. It was also the most affordable mower of their picks. What follows is my review of the Troy-Bilt TriAction TB230, the good and the bad. Lawnmower Details The new Troy-Bilt TB230 is getting a lot of attention because it offers a good mix of popular lawn mower features and details that are often found on higher-end walk-behind mowers but it still retails for under [...]

I was finally able to use my $5 coupon for Scotts EZ Seed this year at a local hardware store, so I decided to follow through on my original plan of running a side-by-side review of Scotts EZ Seed Turf Builder product vs my own fast method for growing grass. Scotts EZ Seed is now available from Amazon.com! Scotts claims their EZ Seed product can grow grass on a brick and I’ve even seen a few demonstrations in the stores where that appears to be the case. All you have to do is keep the product wet and it will eventually start growing. So I decided to test their “grow grass on a brick” claim because while it sounds outrageous it really isn’t a very far-fetched idea. But first, we have to talk about what we have here. What Is Scott’s EZ Seed? If you buy some Scott’s EZ Seed at a local store the first thing you’ll be struck with his how light the package is. You expect it to feel like you’re picking up a big container of bird seed or grass seed, but it’s really much lighter than that. While a similarly sized container of seed might [...]

Trying to find gifts for the man or woman who enjoys doing a lot of his or her own home improvement projects can be challenging. Home improvement can be a very creative endeavor at times (painting, landscaping, planning your next project) and also very exacting and mechanical in nature (electrical work, plumbing, refinishing furniture). There is a right way and a wrong way to do things, but between those two extremes there is often a lot of room for creativity. So what sort of gifts can you buy for the person who loves home improvements? A multitool can be a handy and affordable gift for the home improvement enthusiast! It’s a difficult question because it’s always difficult to tell exactly what your home improvement lover actually has planned, what tools he or she already has (or even needs). It’s probably best to avoid large power tools complex equipment that you don’t fully understand. For those sort of purchases it’s best to let person who’s going to do the work actually pick out the tools. Instead, you’ll want to focus on getting home improvement gifts that are still useful and helpful and still offer the person a chance to be creative [...]

This summer my wife and I spent a fair amount of time and energy on increasing the “curb appeal” of our home and the last official exterior home improvement we’re performed this year was purchasing one of those fancy new metal house number plaques! Our old house numbers sign before we painted our house. Our previous house numbers were more than likely original to our house: they were black metal letters that were screwed directly onto our wood shingles. They spelled out our house number in script letters and were nearly impossible to see, much less read, from the street. They were also placed on the opposite side of the door from our front porch light, so they were virtually invisible at night. Big hardware stores like Lowe’s and The Home Depot sell a large variety of metal custom-ordered house number signs under different brand names but they’re almost all actually made by a sign and mailbox company called Whitehall Products. The plaques are almost always mounted tightly to the wall so you’re really unable to get a good idea of the quality of them. I decided to write up a little review, just to let people know that those [...]

After putting up the drywall and finishing the walls in my basement room it was finally time to apply some primer and paint. I was going to just use a regular paint roller, but I had a unique chance to try out the new Wagner TurboRoll Power Paint Roller and I’m glad I did. The Wagner TurboRoll Power Paint Roller You see, after I wrote about painting my house this summer I was contacted by a gentleman from Wagner who asked me some questions about my project. One thing led to another and he sent me two free TurboRoll Powered Paint Rollers to try in my basement. In the interest of full disclosure, I received these two TurboRoll Power Paint Rollers in exchange for this unbiased review. I usually use a plain old disposable paint roller with the traditional method of pouring the paint into the paint tray, running the roller into the tray and applying the paint to the wall. The process of painting with roller is about 100 times faster than with a brush, but it’s also a process that punctuated with lots of mess and moving paint around from can to tray to roller to wall. The [...]

So far I’ve spent my summer starting a bunch of exterior home improvement projects around the house which all, in one form or another, seem to require me to use a ladder. Last year I got “lucky” and only ended up replacing the wooden fence around my yard which required absolutely no ladder work at all. This year I’m painting the exterior of my home, replacing some aluminum gutters with vinyl gutters and even replacing some rotting fascia behind the gutters. I have a Ranch style home with a roof line that’s generally only about 11 feet off the ground but it has a few peaks which extend nearly 20 feet high. When I first bought my home I went out and bought a 12 foot long adjustable ladder which has, for the most part, allowed me to get to everything I needed to inside and outside my home. With the painting project and gutter project I finally figured I needed to get some sort of ladder standoff or ladder stabilizer that would allow me to lean my ladder against the wall or maybe even get up to the roof a little more safely and without denting and bending some [...]

About this time every year my mailbox starts filling up with ads for air duct cleaning services that come into your home and actually vacuum out all the accumulated dust and debris (and even mold) that builds up the metal ducts of any sort of forced air heating or air conditioner system. These companies usually pull up to your house in vans that have tremendous vacuum cleaning units in them. I’ve watched them as they run large hoses (more like giant tubes) into a home and basically suck out all the dust and debris from the vents of a home. Some actually scrub the insides of the ducts, but mold isn’t a big problem in my part of the country, so most of the ones around me seem to offer just the vacuuming service. I didn’t want to have my home’s air ducts cleaned but my wife saw a coupon in one of our local papers that advertised a “$39.95″ special that included a cleaning of 10 vents and 1 intake trunk of a forced air heating or AC system. I was skeptical, but our house is over 50 years old and the vents had never been properly vacuumed out [...]

Most homeowners looking for a home improvement contractor follow the same pattern: they call around to the various contractors and describe the project they want to have done. The contractors then either schedule visits or give approximate quotes over the phone. The homeowner has to keep track of all this information and make a choice on what home improvement contractor to use. Once the home owner and home improvement contactor have decided on an approximate price the whole scheduling and negotiation process has to start all over again for when the job will get done. We’ve already protected all the outlets and put up doorknob guards on most of the doors, but our cabinets were still fairly accessible to our son until recently. I did some searching for baby proof cabinet locks and while the cheap plastic ones seem to work initially, a lot of people complain about their toddler being able to figure out how to unlatch them pretty quickly. Tot Locks are available at Amazon.com. I couldn’t use any cabinet knob locking mechanisms for my kitchen because my kitchen cabinets are builder’s grade from 1980 and don’t even have knobs. I shopped around for a while and I finally stumbled across a line of cabinet locks called “Tot Locks” so I thought I’d check them out. I picked up the Safety 1st Magnetic Tot Lok Deluxe Starter Set a few days ago and decided to give it a try. I’m thinking about designing some built-in cabinets for that area, but I like the idea of hiding the HD TV when it isn’t in use so my living room can be both a formal room with no TV and an informal room when I have the TV on. Of course, TVs that are hidden and out of the way are also less likely to get damaged or broken by kids playing ball in the house or clumsy party guests or even agile pets. It turns out there are a lot of cool options available that will help me display my TV but hide it from view too: Hiding Your TV With Lift Cabinets Premium TV Lift Cabinets – One of the most popular and widely available options for hiding a TV from site is to use a TV lift cabinet. These sorts of cabinets have been used for over 50 years, [...]

You can’t walk into any store selling any sort of home goods these days that isn’t aggressively marketing Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs). By now most people know that CFLs use much less energy than regular incandescent bulbs and give out the equivalent amount of light. And the bulbs are getting more convenient and easier to use everyday with better designs and taking up less space. But no matter how well designed they are, they still contain small amounts of the poisonous chemical mercury. Exposure to enough mercury can have some pretty dangerous and life-threatening affects on your central nervous system. That means that as a homeowner you’re faced with a difficult choice: The CFL Bulb: Environmental Savior or Toxic Mercury Poison device? You could switch to CFLs, using less energy and reducing pollution…but you are buying products with mercury in them. You could begin to use more CFL light bulbs, but continue to be afraid of breaking one. or You could keep using incandescent bulbs, avoiding the mercury issue, but using more energy and causing more pollution. Not an easy choice! This entire mercury issue has been brought to the forefront lately by some news reports about a mother named [...]

The Home Depot as introduced a new program called “Eco Options” which attempts to identify environmentally friendly products throughout its store. These products will clearly be labeled as part of the Eco Option program and will have less of an environmental impact than similar home improvement products beside them. Eco Options Promoting environmentally friendly home improvement and building projects is not a unique marketing plan for a business to take, but the fact that it’s a company as large as The Home Depot does grab headlines. The Home Depot is not only hoping to help the environment and reduce energy usages, but it makes good business sense. Many “green” and environmentally friendly products are now much more affordable than they were just a few years ago, perform much better and are much more in demand as consumers look for more ways to save money and energy in their homes and businesses. The Home Depot introduces its new Eco Options Environmentally Friendly Products program According to Home Depot: Products with the Eco Options label are either eco friendly by definition, such as solar lights that use natural power, or have met certain environmental performance criteria verified by Scientific Certification Systems, an [...]

When I was putting up my Christmas lights a few months ago it struck me that I have no idea how long of a string a lights I’d really need because I didn’t really know how long my roof line was when I included the peak at the front of my house. I could have climbed up on a ladder and tried to measure the entire length, but that’s would have been a time-consuming and slow process seeing how I didn’t want my wife up on the roof with me holding the other end of the tape measure. If I had been a little more clever I could have used my digital camera and a yard stick to get a fairly accurate measurement. All I would have needed to do was place a yard stick somewhere in my photo (preferably flat up against a straight surface) and then taken a front-facing photo of my roof line with my yard stick somewhere in the photo. Note the three yardsticks floating end to end on the front of my house. If you know anything about digital photo editing then you can pretty much guess the next step. Even the basic digital photo [...]
