My biggest question (that I can't seem to find the answer to) is what to do with all those empty boxes that you need to keep? (Ie: Printer box, PS3 and Wii boxes, etc.) If I ever sell these items, they're worth more if you have the original box that it came in... but they take up so much room in my basement. I hate keeping them on shelves because it seems like valuable space that empty boxes shouldn't be utilizing... any ideas??? Thanks for this post... had some great ideas!

Great article. Why do I have 13 boxes of Christmas decorations (at least!)Thank goodness for Rubbermaid containers. What do you suggest for all the little items, shoe boxes, like all the small, miscellaneous items that I currently have in one large sweater box that I have to go thru when I need to find a small item, i.e. tape measures, etc. This has me stumped. Thanks

Aurora,

Thanks for the kind words... And, YES! We just used freecycle.org a few months ago for the first time. It worked pretty well, though we still had a few things that we couldn't even give away!

I must say, this is one of the best articles I have read on organizing a basement. I am in the final stages of organizing mine. freecycle.org is a great way to give away your unwanted, still have some use left in them, items. People come to your house to pick them up. It's a time saver. I work a 40 hour week & so I often just leave on my porch. People coming to get the item(s) are fine with that.

Some great ideas--wanted to share something I have learned the hard way--water can absorb into plastic boxes (yes, even the name brand totes)or if water not absorb the items can still get wet so I am slowly but surely acquiring pallets from craigslist freebies and elevating ALL that much--thanks again I am going to keep this page open and keep looking to keep self motivated

Thanks this really helped me! I just want to say that if you have a chance of flooding in your basement, then use tall plastic boxes on the bottom and stack your things from least important to most important just in case! Im only 16 and my task right now is the basement so I better get organizing! (:

Deep decluttering is definitely the key to organizing your basement and keeping it organized. This article has some great tips.

Another alternative for selling locally is Craigslist. It's free and doesn't have the restrictions of eBay. Of course, nothing beats the joy of giving!

I recommend filling the basement up with concrete. You never have to worry about clutter again.
